Abstract

This study investigated the mediating effects of social support and coping on the relation between traumatic event type, posttraumatic growth and wisdom by the data from 247 adults by using path analysis. Besides, the difference of the level of posttraumatic growth and related variables between traumatic event type groups. At first, The results of the MANCOVA, person-related traumatic event group were higher than the non-personal traumatic event group in negative coping and trauma stress level, and lower in social support, positive coping, posttraumatic growth and wisdom. The path analysis results shows that traumatic event type was related to wisdom by mediate factors. Traumatic event type affected wisdom through social support, positive coping, posttraumatic growth. The significant mediators were social support, positive coping, posttraumatic growth. Negative coping was not a significant mediator between event type and posttraumatic growth. The results show that non-personal traumatic event group are tends to have high level of social support, positive coping, posttraumatic growth, and wisdom. In the end, we described that the implication and the limitation of this study and suggestions for following studies.

Abstract

This study examined the effects of various individual differences on children’s memory of a stressful experience. The participants for the current study were children (N=85) aged 4-9 years those who experienced a naturally occurring stressful experience from a dental procedure. There was overall negative relation between the level of stress and children’s memory performance. However, more interestingly, the results of this study provided some further evidence that several cognitive (i.e., receptive language ability and working memory capacity) and emotional (i.e., children's general anxiety condition, children’s self-report of pain and anxiety about the event) individual difference factors were associated with variations in children’s remembering across ages. The results suggest that the relation between stress and children’s memory might be impacted in part by children’s various individual characteristics. Furthermore, the findings are discussed in the applied context that based on the results clinical and legal professionals can tailor interviews to best meet children’s needs and capabilities, and create developmentally and individually sensitive guidelines for interviewing children in the legal system.

Abstract

This study examined how drivers of different cultural orientations(individualism vs. collectivism) attribute the cause(dispositional vs. situational) of four simulated driving situations which were varied in types(cutting-in and sudden-stop by the other driver) and differential emphasis on other the other driver’s driving attitude or situational factor. The results showed the followings. First, the drivers generally showed higher attribution scores on the dispositional factor than the situational factor, except for the ‘sudden-stop: situation emphasis’ scenario condition. Second, when drivers’ cultural orientation and attribution styles were considered together, it was found that, except for the ‘cutting-in: disposition emphasis’ scenario condition. the drivers of collectivism tended to attribute more to situational factor than the drivers of individualism, In contrast, the drivers of individualism showed higher attribution scores on dispositional factor than situational factor in all driving scenario conditions. Implication and suggestion were discussed.

Abstract

This study investigated the mediating effects of depression on the relationship between perceived problem solving ability and suicidal ideation. 548 college students were examined with PSI(Problem Solving Inventory), BDI(Beck Depression Inventory) and SSI(Scale for Suicidal Ideation). To explore the relationship among these variables, correlation analysis was undertaken. Regression analysis was then applied to test the mediating effects of depression. In the results, perceived problem solving ability, depression and suicidal ideation were correlated positively. Depression operated as a factor to mediate between the perceived problem solving ability and suicidal ideation. This mean that perceived problem solving ability impact indirectly, rather than directly, on suicidal ideation. These results suggest the importance of psychological intervention to improve depression and perceived problem solving ability that affect suicidal ideation.

Abstract

Despite leisure has been well-studied as an influence in coping with stress, psychological process of leisure experience have not examined. This study examined the effect of leisure experience on emotional exhaustion. Also, we attempted to find out whether psychological detachment from work has mediating effects on the relationship between leisure experience and emotional exhaustion. Data were collected from 215 workers employed in a variety of organizations. We divided leisure experience into perceived competence, social relation, nature relation, and control nature based on factor analysis. Results indicate that only perceived competence was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion. Further, psychological detachment partially mediated this relation. This result presented that perceived competence is most important factor in leisure experience for psychological recovery.

Abstract

This study examined the factors influencing aging anxiety among college students. 336 college students from universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do were participated in the survey. Regression analyses confirmed that variables influencing 4 dimensions of aging anxiety are different. Quality of contact and attitude toward elderly predicted ‘Fear of Old People’ dimension. As for ‘Psychological Concerns’, death anxiety, attitude toward elderly and Quality of contact were influencing factors. Death anxiety, Quality of contact and sex was significant factors predicting. ‘Physical/Appearance anxiety’. As for Fear of Losses, Death anxiety and attitude toward elderly affect. On the whole college students' aging anxiety tended to increase as having lower death anxiety, positive quality of contact, positive attitude towards elderly. And female has higher Physical/ Appearance anxiety than male. whereas results have not found a correlation between either knowledge of aging and frequency of contact with aging anxiety. Discussion focuses on the importance of the findings, limitations and future directions.

Abstract

This study attempted to discover the dimensions of Korean culture, with the presumption that the cross-cultural studies(Hofstede, 1980, 1997; Schwartz, 1992, 1994; Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner, 1997; House et al., 2004) have limitation to explain non-western culture including Korean culture. Even though there are some Korean cultural studies, they used heuristic approaches applying the authors' experiences and intuitions. This study applied the Cultural Consensus Theory to overcome the previous studies' shortcomings and to discover the dimensions that can be empirically proved by data. In specific this study conducted in-depth interview, used content analysis, did frequency analysis, and applied pilesort technique, multidimensional scaling and network analysis. As a result, this study obtained five categories: public self-consciousness, group-focused orientation, affective human relations, hierarchical culture, and result-orientation. It is expected that these dimensions can be used as important variables that may explain Korean social phenomena.

In result, the degree of rapport perceived by interviewees was different significantly between high rapport group and low rapport group of 4 each rapport technique. Result suggests that personalization and listening techniques would be efficient way of building a rapport in investigative interviewing.

Abstract

The study examined the mental representation of children in foster care through the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB) and reviewed difference between children in foster care and typical children in terms of mental representation. Subjects of the study included a total of 50 children: 25 children (11 boys and 14 girls), aged from 5 to 8, in foster care in Gyeonggi Province, and 25 typical children (11 boys and 14 girls), aged from 5 to 8, who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The research findings are summarized as follows: First, in terms of mental representation, children in foster care showed less subjects of empathic relations and more subjects of disorganized aggression than typical children. Second, children in foster care showed lower coherence mental representation than typical children. Finally, children in foster care were more likely to fail in emotional regulation than typical children in mental representation.
