Abstract

This paper reviewed the researches of adolescent's behavior as following three main viewpoint in order to defend the impairment of adolescent's rights to their own life style: (1) the influences of environmental factors(family, school and society) to adolescent's behavior, (2) the influences of adolescent's activity areas or activities to their behavior and (3) the understanding of adolescent's behavior by the analysis of their delinquent activities. For further understandings of adolescent's behavior, the dynamic research approaches and the interdisciplinary studies are necessary.

Abstract

The present paper tried to review psychological perspectives on adolescent in Korean culture. We suggested the starting point for study of adolescent should be on the definition of adolescent, i.e., what is adolescent. In oder to do it, we reviewed the perspective of the old generation, especially negative one, and myth and psychologism of developmental psychology on adolescent. Accordingly, we'd like to suggest an alternative approach on adolescent in psychology. That is called activity-environmental focused approach for studying adolescent. We also argued the value of adolescent in modern society and suggested how to view and approach the adolescent in psychology.

Abstract

To understand changing adolescent developmental environment, this paper critically reviewed a) social factors influencing family structure and function and b) outcomes of these changes. Also based on recent research findings of diverse families, this paper presented how individual, familial, and social characteristics are related each other to adolescent development. Based on literature review, new research directions and research issues are discussed.

Abstract

The present study reviewed the study on the impact of divorce upon children's well-being presented in both abroad and Korea. The criteria for the selection of the study for review are as follow; The study must have a comparative child group of non-divorced family and include at least one psychological variable that are measured quantitatively. Two studies are found in Korea and 92 in abroad. Both the domestic studies and foreign studies indicate the lower self-esteems of children of divorced families than those of children of non divorced families. In domestic study, the sociable was found as the variable that give a negative impact to the children of divorced families among elementary population but not to the children of middle school. In contrast, the studies of foreign showed the negative impact of the seven psychological variables included in the studies upon children of divorced families. The study suggests that the impacts of divorce on the children will be more pronounced in Korea than in abroad and the necessities of the studies in the future in Korea.

Abstract

Recently, rates of depression and suicide of adolescents in industrialized countries, including Korea, were rapidly increasing. Adolescent depression was often associated with anxiety disorder, eating disorder, attention deficits hyperactivity/disruptive behavior disorder. and suicidal attempts. Epidemiological data about depression and suicide of adolescents are reviewed. Psychological theories of depression and suicide are integrated in terms of a control theory interpretation. Issues about 'relationships between depression and anxiety' 'relationships between depression and suicide' 'the reason why rates of depression and suicide are rapidly increasing at adolescence' 'the reason why the different prevalence of depression between female and male is conspicuous at adolescence' and 'Korean culture associated with depression and suicide of adolescents' are discussed in terms of the revised control theory interpretation.

Abstract

A review of literature revealed that damaged self-confidence of men as social agents may be the primary, if not proximal, cause of domestic violence. Accumulated damages in social confidence and self-assurance may be moderated by action repertoire acquired during childhood, and mediated by adulthood circumstances such as marital discords and the lack of social support to result in the typical cycle of violence and subsequent feeling of remorse. The present treatments for the domestically violent men in Korea seem to be ineffective to reduce the number of incidents in the society because the treatments are viewed as punishments by the men, damage their social confidence further by stigmatizing them in the community, and destroy their social resources and support systems. It was suggested in this paper to reduce the role of law enforcement and correctional administration to rehabilitate the currently violent men. At the same time, it was also suggested for the Korean court to implement the paradigm of Therapeutic Jurisprudence in handling domestic violence cases. It was argued that the court should take active roles as a healing and rehabilitating agent by cooperating with non-government community establishments such as hospitals, universities and self-help organizations. The reasons and implications of those suggestions were discussed in detail.

Abstract

This paper examines the influence of interpersonal relationship on delinquent behavior among adolescents. The role that parent-child relationship, teacher-student relationship, and relationship with friends play on delinquent behavior is reviewed. Review of empirical studies reveal the following results. First, adolescents who perceive their parents as being hostile and rejecting are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. Second, those adolescents with parents, who have low expectations and who are less likely pressure them to succeed academically, are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. Third, adolescents who feel that they have been abandoned by their parents are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. Fourth, those adolescents with low social support from parents and teachers and high social support from their friends are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. Fifth, those students who feel hostility from their teachers, have negative relationship with teachers, and experience greater punishment are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. The results indicate that punishment can have adverse effect on some adolescents, further damaging the teacher-student relationship. Punishment can further reinforce the existing negative cycle that can increase the likelihood of adolescents engaging in delinquent behavior. The results indicate that a lack of support from parents and teacher leads to low academic and self-regulatory efficacy, which leads to low academic performance, which can results in punishments that could further damage their relationship with their parents and teachers and bring them closer to their friends. Adolescents caught up in this negative cycle are more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. These results indicate the need to reform the relational, social, and cultural environment of adolescents who are engaged in delinquent behavior.

Abstract

This paper is a preliminary literature review to give lights on the importance of academic research on sex offences. First, definition and etiological factors of sex offences were introduced and then it was attempted to classify offensive behaviors. Furthermore, it was explored on which aspects of our criminal justice system the research results in the Western societies could be applied. Related to recidivism research, risk factors were explored again and intervention strategies were investigated to reduce the future risk of sex offenders. Finally, these findings were evaluated for the applicability to Korean criminal justice system.

Abstract

In recent years, electronic games, home computers, and the internet have assumed an important place in our lives. This paper presents a review of the researches on the relation of computer game and children's and adolescent's development. Researches on the impact of computer game on perceptual and cognitive development including attention, spatial perception, numerical ability, problem solving are reviewed. The relation of computer game use and emotional, social and personality development and aggressive development, especially General Aggressive Model(GAM) are also explained. On the basis of this reviews, the future directions of research are discussed.

Abstract

This paper provides a theoretical and conceptual framework for understanding adolescent culture and educational achievement in Korea. In the first part of the paper, the authors outline a research paradigm in cultural psychology and adolescent culture. In the second section, the traditional family structure, the role of parents, and how they have been changed by modernization are outlined. In the third section, socialization practices and parent-child relationship are reviewed. In the fourth section, Western theories that have been developed to explain educational achievement and their limitations are examined. In the fifth section, factors that contribute to educational success of Korean students are presented. In the final section, the impact of centralized, standardized and rigid educational system that is imposed on adolescents is discussed. The highly regulated and centralized bureaucracy restricts educational and career opportunities for adolescents and it is responsible for the high rate of violence, delinquency, and bullying in Korea. The need for encouraging civil society that allows for diversity of ideas and skills and at the same time maintaining strong relational bonds are discussed.
